Is it worth cultivating the fancy types of lettuce and simply purchasing iceberg?

I have been reading about the nutritional variations in the different lettuce types, and I feel like beginning to grow my own mix of gourmet lettuce. I am a complete amateur in do-it-yourself gardening, though. Is it worth purchasing a complete toolset of this? I spotted on abodelook a wonderful starter kit which contains indoor and outdoor gardening. Have you tried their Green Collection tools? I would like something that is durable, yet not too costly.
