Does Black Locust Have Thorns? What You Need to Know
Permalink

So, does black locusts have thorns? Yes, black locust trees (Robinia pseudoacacia) tend to have very sharp thorns growing next to the base of the leaves on the tree. The thorns may grow to reach up to one inch in length, serving as a natural protection mechanism for the plant.

While these thorny plants might seem like a challenge to deal with when working with them, they have plenty of positive aspects. Black locusts have very rapid growth rates, high-quality wood, and beautiful fragrant flowers. As a result, people prefer using them in various ways such as building fences, erosion prevention, and landscaping projects where black locusts may be appropriate.

When working with black locusts, one should be careful about being scratched by their thorns; thus, gloves would be helpful.
