To sign into the chatrooms, just click on the link to the chat room of your choice and let it fully load until you see the inside of it with the nicknames of others on the right.  You will enter the room as "Guest#####" in bold.  To change your nickname to the nickname of your choice, the very first thing to type and send into the chatroom is the nickname you want to use.  This will change your "Guest" nick to the nick you want.

Now, if for any reason the chat room will not load on your computer, it is most likely because you do not have the java capability it requires.  But this is solvable.  Just go to http://www.java.com/ and download the Java software there.  It's free and only uses a very small amount of size on your computer.  Also it runs quietly in the background so it doesn't interupt anything else you do while on the computer.
