Richard Mille RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure Sylvester Stallone is one of the wildest watches of the year

Now that it's the end of 2018, I'm starting to reflect on the many new timepieces I've played with throughout the year and trying to decide which one left a lasting impression. The nearly million-dollar Richard Mille RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure, produced for and with actor, director and action movie star Sylvester Stallone, is undoubtedly one of them.

A few months after Tourbillon Adventure debuted (almost by accident, since someone felt compelled to share it on social media), I had the chance to experience the last piece firsthand. It's really cool and of course watch collectors like me love to please. Unfortunately, I'm not one of those collectors who can afford it. Nevermind, I accept the fact that you need a Stallone-like career to buy and complete one of these. I don't see two elements of the watch. These are special clip-on attachments that come with removable flap compasses and water purification tablets. Yes, water purification tablets.

Given its story and price, the Richard Mille RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure is an odd limited-edition product. Part fantasy survival tool, part homage to Stallone's John Rambo character, this watch is a beautiful mechanical tech toy for adult men who would rather stay outside (presumably fighting for their lives). In addition to striking the time, the watch's in-house RM25-01 hand-wound movement includes a 30-minute chronograph, power reserve indicator, mainspring torque indicator, function selection hand and, of course, a tourbillon. Other features in the watch that are not part of the movement include a compass, a navigation bezel, a bubble level, and a small container labeled "water sterilization" for those pills I'm talking about.

These tablets are probably the cheapest part of the watch, but the way Richard Mille talks about them I'm not sure if they come with the watch. Although how is this possible? For this type of money, Richard Mille can easily afford hundreds of the aforementioned pills - I'm not even sure how many can fit in a capsule (it's very well designed, by the way). Cool Richard Mille Water Disinfectant Carrying Case Anyone? Richard Mille understands more or less that his customers probably won't put a water purification tablet into the small opening and closing cavity located on the hour indicator at 2 o'clock. Although they might put some other type of "drug" in there - pretty much anything that can be described as an "adventure in a pill" should be fine.

The RM 25-01 would not be a Richard Mille without a deep look at the movement from the front and back of the watch. The skeletonized dial showcases the complex tourbillon-based mechanical movement, which operates at a frequency of 3 Hz (21.60 vibrations/hour) and has a power reserve of approximately 72 hours. The movement is produced by APRP (Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi) for Richard Mille - a professional watch designer and manufacturer with whom Richard Mille has worked more or less with the company since its inception. Although the RM25-01 movement looks unique in the way it is rendered, I hope Richard Mille will use this opportunity to introduce a completely new movement or complication. Then again, even if they didn't do it on the movement, the Tourbillon Adventure was the first Richard Mille watch to feature a compass, spirit level and small case capsule.

If you remember my previous article about the Richard Mille RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure Slyvester Stallone, it has two bezel options. A small lever on the left side of the case releases the bezel, which has a bayonet-style connection to the bezel. The simpler of the two bezels is a colorful rotating navigation bezel, which is cool but a little too busy for me, with four font colors and concentric rings of navigation information. While you can use the bezel for navigation purposes, I'm not sure anyone would use it for that.

Even more interesting and novel is the compass bezel attachment. The downside of a compass bezel is that you can't really use it if you want a handy glance at your wrist. The compass bezel of the Richard Mille RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure watch features true military stealth with a hinged design that folds down to cover the dial. There is only a small opening in the hood, and the compass needle can be seen when the compass is pointing to magnetic north. The hinge itself features a layered and machined TPT carbon sheet, which is beautiful. Despite the texture, the carbon inserts on the titanium hood are very smooth to the touch.

The compass itself is craftedgiven its sharpness, it looks as though it could slice through bread. To view the compass on your wrist, you can lift the hood to see the compass superimposed on the watch face. Of course, the downside of a compass is that you can't just read the time with the hood closed. Having said that, when the hood is closed, you now have a tall can of tactical tuna on your wrist, just waiting to be the subject of a conversation that starts "what's hiding on your wrist?"

Personally, I find the compass to be a very interesting tool and probably worth more time in conjunction with a luxury watch. Getting them right is a challenge, so you rarely find traditional physical compass hands on a watch. Instead, there's a plethora of digital compasses on all kinds of digital watches, from Casio to smar****ches. The last mechanical watch I remember with a compass was the Porsche Design P'6520 Heritage Compass (hands on at aBlogtoWatch here). You could call it a "poor man's Richard Mille RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure". The Porsche Design P'6520 has never been "traditional beauty", but it's still a pretty cool object. Like the Richard Mille, it has a hinge on the case, which is actually a module for the chronograph movement and dial. Pressing the button on the side of the case will release it, allowing you to see the compass underneath. The Porsche Design P'6520 is obviously the more practical option (if that's what you want), and for just one Richard Mille RM 25-01 you can buy all P'6520 watches

Richard Mille does beat Porsche Design in exclusivity and looks. Likewise, the Richard Mille RM 25-01 Tourbillon Adventure is by no means handsome in the traditional sense, though it makes up for its patchwork design with super cool and refined execution. No one beats Richard Mille when it comes to bold design and detailing of components. The sheer level of micro-handmade custom parts used for the RM 25-01 and other exclusive timepieces of this type is impressive. Despite its size, the Tourbillon Adventure is also quite wearable. The 50.85mm wide case is ergonomically designed to wrap around your wrist - thanks to the TPT carbon and titanium case materials, it's very light to wear. Of course, it wouldn't be a proper John Rambo watch without some camouflage.

As a kid who watched Rambos in the 1980s, I had no idea how to make a timepiece like this - even though I probably really liked it. No doubt I don't understand price - here's an opportunity to point you to an article I wrote about why Richard Mille timepieces are so expensive. To properly understand a product like this, you need to understand more than just watches and modern For luxury goods, it is also necessary to understand Stallone's relationship with the watch industry, as well as himself as a trendsetter. Richard Mille didn't discuss production numbers, but this will be a limited-edition timepiece. It was designed for Sylvester Stallone, his close friends, and Richard Mille customers who not only needed a little more adventure in their lives, but craved the thrill of being in the wild.
